Make Drinking Water Fun (Spice It Up by Adding Different Fruits and Even Flavored Packets)
The human body is made up of 55% to 60% of water, according to an article published by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Science School. It also explains that water is essential for some many of the human body’s functions: brain manufacturing and transmitting, saliva formation, temperature regulation, cellular regrowth, brain and spinal cord protection, waste disposal, food to energy conversion and oxygen delivery around to different organs. Indeed, The USGS Water Science School article recommends that an adult drinks 2.2-3.0 L of water a day. Clearly, water is very much needed for life as humans know it.
Yet, drinking enough water every day can turn into a chore, too often forgotten amidst the daily activities. Luckily, there are more than a few ways to make drinking water fun.
Adding flavor to water is a great way to switch up the flavor profiles and keep variety alive. Consider some of the following flavors when looking to update make drinking water more interesting:
Tart: Citrus fruits like lemon, lime, orange, pineapple and grapefruit work best in order to give that tart vibe. Buying juice and splashing some into water is great, but also consider using the remnants of whatever citrus fruit may have been consumed earlier. For example, if a grapefruit was eaten earlier, plop it into a bowl, fill it with water, then let it sit in the refrigerator. Later, once the grapefruit has steeped, pour the water into a glass and voila, nothing wasted, tasty water gained. Or, take a note from Shape and add a squeeze of lemon or lime, or even both.
Fresh: Steeping herbs like mint or basil is kind of like making a mojito without alcohol and sugar, notes Women’s Health. It is a great way to freshen the taste of the water. Also, consider adding cucumber slices for that same light note.
Spicy: Spice things up by adding cinnamon. As Women’s Health describes, simmer a cinnamon stick in a cup of water. Use the resulting liquid as a mixer for cold ice water. In addition, Women’s Health notes that cinnamon can also help lower cholesterol and blood sugar. So, making it spicy is a great choice all around.
Fruity: When in doubt, add fresh fruit to the mix. Everyday Health recommends a few different types, mostly of the berry varieties: raspberries, strawberries and blueberries, as well as watermelon chunks.
Flavor Packets: Sometimes, quick-and-easy is the way to go. If a flavor boost is needed in a pinch, consider Everyday Health’s advice and use sugar-free drink mixes or even flavor cartridges that attached to a faucet filtration system.
Change It Up
When changing the flavor just isn’t enough, sometimes changing the form of the water itself may help.
Ice Is Nice: Adding fruit to the water’s ice cubes is great way to keep things interesting. Consider adding fruit-water purees, as recommended by Women’s Health, which will break down as the cubes melt, adding more and more flavor to the drink while also being visually appealing. Or, go the popsicle route, as recommended by Parents. The frozen water with flavor is an excellent way to make sure both kids and adults are getting the water they need.
Make It Bubbly: Many people prefer sparkling water to plain, according to Everyday Health. Try bubbly seltzer or naturally effervescent mineral water if bubbles sound intriguing.
Tea Time: According to Everyday Health, herbal, fruit, green, white and red teas are excellent because they have no caffeine and plenty of added benefits like antioxidants. Consider turning water into tea if the cold method isn’t doing it anymore.
