The Problem with Tap

Not all water is good for you, and here’s why:

There are 190 contaminants found in U.S. drinking water that may cause adverse health effects. There also are nearly 2,090 other substances that contaminate drinking water via the water disinfection process, leachate from toxic dumps, gaseous toxic chemical releases from landfills, air pollution, waste water contamination, agricultural pesticide runoff, leaking underground storage tanks, and chemical spills. Surprisingly, many bottled waters are no purer than tap water! Many bottled waters claim their water is rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc. But minerals commonly found in bottled water are added by the producer: We don’t chew on white rock to get calcium, but that’s the source of calcium in mineral water. Plus, along with minerals come nitrates, sulfate, and silica in a lot of bottled water. Water Contamination

Both surface and ground water surfaces are frequently contaminated. Even some of the products used to treat water, such as chlorine, have been linked to adverse health effects on humans like cancer and miscarriage. Ground Water Contamination

Ground water sources such as wells and springs that percolate through the sand, rock, and clay formations are more likely to provide lower amounts of suspended matter, color, and bacterial contamination. However, ground water may also come into contact with and absorb undesirable inorganic minerals such as iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide gas, as well as inorganic chemicals such as lead, sodium, cadmium, chromium, mercury, copper, barium, and arsenic.

Numerous spring waters have been cited for contamination issues because no source is protected, pristine, or free from potential contamination from the earth or man. According to the National Cancer Institute, there are more than 100,000 chemicals commonly used by Americans in household cleaners, solvents, pesticides, food additives, lawn care, and other products. Surface Water Contamination

Water in the atmosphere becomes contaminated even before it falls to the earth. The clouds of water droplets absorb gases such as sulfur dioxide. They carry particles of dust and collect airborne bacteria. When water falls to the earth as rain, it dissolves or absorbs part of many compounds that lie on the earth’s surface: pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, animal wastes, fertilizers, etc. As a result, surface drinking water sources such as lakes and rivers are subject to agricultural and industrial pollution, run-off of mud and decayed vegetation, and animal and human wastes that provide an environment for the growth of algae, bacteria, and viruses.
